I have been slowly working on a new downloadable add-on file. It will be called ~~funboyjaymod6.pk3 and it will replace the current ~~funboyjaymod5.pk3.

The current file we have been using adds the venom in place of the M97 shotgun, and adds the nine vsay chat sounds.

The new file will have this stuff, but also an M16 in place of the sten (like we had it six months ago) and also will enable spectators to use the voice chats (per request of Friedrich). I will put it on the server tonight. You can go in your jaymod folder and delete the old one if you want, and any of the earlier ~~funboyjaymod.pk3 too.

I have been thinking about this particular change for a while, but wanted to wait until we switched to Linux, but that has been delayed a bit by our server host. I finished it tonight while I should have been doing other things (I was procrastinating learning how to install Debian Linux kernels =yawn=).

So I will upload this file now so everyone can have more fun now. Because we like fun.

I tried playing tonight, but got an invalid .PK3 files error. Is this related to the new file or something else?

It is certainly possible, but you are the first person to report this problem here today.

You may have a bad file in your jaymod folder. You can safely delete the entire jaymod folder from your "C:/Program Files/Wolfenstein - Enemy territory" directory. Just delete the jaymod folder, you don't have to back it up or save anything. Then when you reconnect to our server, it will reinstall a new folder with the files you need to play on that server.

If that doesn't help, you can look in your etmain folder (C:/Program Files/Wolfenstein - Enemy territory/etmain) and check for partial files. Sometimes a download will get interrupted and create a partial file that can create problems. These partial files usually end in ".tmp" to imply that they are "temporary" (not sure why this was originally set up like this, but that's the way it is). Just delete any file that ends in .tmp

If that doesn't work... just save your etkey file (from etmain), uninstall ET (control panel -> add or remove programs -> ET), delete the remaining stuff in "C:/Program Files/Wolfenstein - Enemy territory", and reinstall ET and the 2.60 patch. Then paste your etkey file back in your etmain folder and you should be good to go. Be sure you deleted everything after you uninstalled ET, lots of players uninstall ET and then forget to clean out the leftover files. Then they have the same problem after they reinstall, because they left the bad files in place.

Hope that helps.

Well I just went on the server and watched for a bit after posting this comment. I saw it was pretty empty for 8PM so I knew something was wrong. Only a couple people on.

I watched Yellowhammer (long-time server regular) try to connect, and he got kicked twice for a bad pk3 error. So yes, there is some kind of file conflict on the server.

It is difficult to change files without causing an unanticipated problem somewhere.

So I went into the server files and changed the name from ~~funboyjaymod6.pk3 to ~~funboyjaymod7.pk3. This will force everyone to download a fresh copy under a new name (don't worry it is a small file, like 2 or 3 MB).

I checked all the maps and the names and sizes look fine.

OK, I had to do a second modification, and it is fixed now. I had to remove the chunk of code that lets spectators talk in chat and displays the kill/death/spree stuff. The players who could not get on before were able to come back on easily without the pk3 kick.

On a side note, I wonder how many players were getting kicked all the time when we were using this code last summer. I removed it due to lag and slow downloads, but it probably was blocking a lot of players too. So removing it last summer helped a lot.

TECHNICAL STUFF (in case someone cares):

The actual file code causing the random bad pk3 kicks was a modified cgame file (client game), installed in a distributed pk3 file to all players on connecting to the server. Apparently it causes conflicts with some ET installations. Not sure why, but removing it from the server fixed the problem.

I had removed some code from a different, much larger pk3 file ((jaymod-2.2.0_reds_v102t.pk3) and added it to our ~~funboyjaymod6.pk3 file. Taking this code back out (in ~~funboyjaymod8.pk3) immediately fixed the bad pk3 kicks and restored things to normal. Here are the names of the files I had used that caused the pk3 kicks:

cgame_mp_x86.bak (this is non-native file for jaymod, made by Redsector)
cgame_mp_x86.dll (native jaymod file that was then modified by Redsector)

I'm able to join the server again, although somewhere between then and now I lost all my experience points. Oh well, i get to start over again. Even after a complete backup..... I was only at 30000 or so.

Good to see you found the error. Thanks for the hard work!
