So, I received a new pc, a HP pavillon G4, I will used it for school, but with a 2.5 dual-core processor, and 4 GB of ram (extensible to 8GB),I think I will be able to play ET and CSGO a lot faster than before ! I'm pretty happy. I just need to make my back-up cds before installing the games !

Yes, that's the first thing you should do, before you download any junk on it ;]

Re: Talking time 2
Also install virtualbox and then put another operating system inside it (linux, xp, whatever you like that does not take a lot of RAM to operate).
Then use the virtual operating system for all your web surfing. That way when (not if) you get infected or hacked it is just the virtual operating system not your "real" one.
If you don't want to do that then be sure to use automatic updates and a good antivirus (microsoft security essentials is free and works great on windows) before you connect to the net. Otherwise you will be reinstalling windows in a month or two.
Also be sure to use firefox or chrome as your web browser, not Internet Explorer. Most of the hacks are designed to work with Internet Explorer. Two reasons - most people use it because it came with their computer, and the hackers want stupid people (preferably with money) not smart victims. Stupid people use Internet Explorer and get hacked and then they are too stupid to realize they are hacked.
There are hacks that target firefox and chrome, sure, but nothing like the amount designed for IE.

If you install virtual box you can go to Settings -> Storage -> CD/DVD and assign this to your windows 7 CD. You have to click the little CD icon to the right of the right of the drop-down menu.The-Dwarf wrote:I have an other question. Your win7 CD may or may not work depending on what kind of CD you have. If it is a general install CD for any computer you should be fine, if it is from the original equipment manufacturer (the people who made your computer for example) it may only work on the computer for which it is intended.
Another option if the win7 CD won't work is to download ubuntu, this is a very popular version of linux that is user-friendly and has 1000s of free applications.
I have a decent virtualbox setup tutorial in the tutorial section here on the forum.
Another thing to consider is that Win7 will need at least 2GB of RAM to run well. If you 4GB total you should be OK, but you may see some lag if you are multitasking (like watching videos on one virtual machine while playing a game on another virtual machine).

Something....
Ok, I'll post more, I can't sleep too good this night ;]
Oh well, I always liked the days when they last longer
Virtualbox is great. However I can only use 1,5 GB RAM for it (3 is total), so Ubuntu lags badly. Mint is a lot faster.

For an old pc, I'm pretty sure that xp should be the best one.
Never crashed, and is compatible with A LOT of software.

Re: Talking time 2
lubuntu is ubuntu running lxde desktop instead of unity. It runs faster than normal ubuntu.
XP can be set up to run very fast too.

I need help. I bought Windows 8, I created a new partition in my pc, and I install it. I pretty like W8, it's pretty fast, BUT I HAVE A BIG TROUBLE !
Internet on W8 is VERY VERY VERY and .... (I can say it again) VERY SLOW, particulary in Wifi, I read a lot of website pages, and nothing has solved my problem yet.
I tried with explorer, chrome and firefox, its still the same :VERY LONG !
HELP ME PLEASE !!!!!

Re: Talking time 2
I understand the problem I had. I wasn't able to update my wifi card. So I uninstall it, and I found better drivers on internet. It's not SUPER ULTRA fast, but, it,s a lot better than this afternoon. (It took me like 1 hour to download ccleaner, it was horrible !)
